This week marked World Quantum Day, an annual moment of global reflection on one of the most promising—and least understood—technologies shaping our future: quantum computing. Across the globe, researchers, governments, and tech leaders are investing in this transformational field. And right now, Chicago is positioning itself as the undisputed hub of quantum in the U.S. and beyond.
So let’s break it down: What is quantum? Why should we care? And how is Chicago leading?
At its core, a quantum computer is radically different from today’s classical machines. Classical computers process information using bits—0s and 1s. Quantum computers use “qubits,” which, thanks to the bizarre but powerful principles of quantum mechanics, can represent multiple states at once.
To quote Michael Norman, Director of Argonne National Laboratory’s Quantum Institute:
“A classical bit is like a light switch: on or off. A qubit is more like a globe—it can spin and point anywhere. All possible answers exist at once, and quantum computers pull out the best one.”
That’s not science fiction. That’s the science that will change:
Chicago is uniquely built for the quantum age.
In a recent Reddit AMA and newsletter from M. Harris & Co. —Argonne researchers helped demystify what’s coming next:
“Even if quantum computers don’t fulfill every promise, the discoveries and tech developed along the way—sensors, materials, better algorithms—will revolutionize fields far beyond quantum itself.”
They explained how quantum sensing could allow scientists to give a molecule a kind of MRI scan, unlocking never-before-seen insights into material science and chemistry. And they emphasized how public understanding is key to building a workforce and ecosystem prepared for what’s next.
This is more than emerging tech—it’s a new economic frontier. And Chicago is ready.
From startups to supercolliders, from billion-dollar infrastructure to global talent pipelines, our region has the ingredients to become the global capital of the quantum economy.
The race is on. And Chicago isn’t just in the running—it’s leading.
In a compelling new story from WGN-TV’s Mike Lowe, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker shares why the state is laser-focused on making Chicago the quantum capital of the world. “It’s the next phase of technological development in the world,” says Pritzker, “not just for the United States—this is a worldwide competition.” Don’t miss this insightful look at the emerging tech that’s putting our region on the global map. Moderated by Brad Henderson and hosted by Lincoln Forum and Union League Club of Chicago, this event will dig into the breakthroughs that have positioned Illinois as a leader in quantum and the opportunities that lie ahead.
You don’t want to miss this discussion featuring local experts: Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Director Kristin Richards, IQMP Executive Director and CEO Harley Johnson, Gov. Pritzker’s Chief of Staff Anne Caprara, and more.
As Chicago solidifies its role as a global hub for quantum innovation, PsiQuantum—the anchor tenant of the forthcoming Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park—continues to invest in the community. The company recently donated $10,000 to Bowen High School, located just a mile from the future site, to support hands-on STEM education. The funds will help purchase robotics kits, drones, VR tools, and other tech to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists—right from the South Side. Read more via Chicago Block Club.
