Event Celebrates & Educates the Teachings of Nelson Mandela

CHICAGO, IL – July 1, 2024 –Chicago Sister Cities International (CSCI), an initiative of World Business Chicago, proudly announces “The Spirit of Nelson Mandela: Resolving Conflict. Inspiring Change.” This event hosted by the Durban Committee of CSCI is being held in partnership with The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center on Nelson Mandela’s birthday, Thursday, July 18th, from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
It is exciting to collaborate on an event that highlights the awesome work that organizations are doing to promote peace and anti-violence,” said Dr. Kim Dulaney, Vice President of Education and Public Programs. “Mandela Day is the perfect day to invite people to think beyond their current circumstances, beyond their environments, and to bring their minds out of the loop of negative news. History is a truthteller. Mandela’s legacy reminds us of the possibilities and yields of resilience and commitment, and we have put together an intergenerational celebration so we can remind each other that the past, the present, and the future is better because of the convictions of beautiful, powerful, diligent peace workers.”
The Spirit of Nelson Mandela: Resolving Conflict. Inspiring Change,” event aims to celebrate the life and teachings of Nelson Mandela by focusing on conflict resolution and inspiring positive change in Chicago community, particularly among our younger generations. This free event, open to the public, includes a variety of activities, for guests of all ages, designed to engage, educate, and empower.
“We are thrilled to host this event that not only honors Nelson Mandela’s legacy but also provides practical tools for conflict resolution and personal development,” said Adrienne Tonegate, Executive Vice President, World Business Chicago. “By engaging our younger citizens in these important conversations and training sessions, we are investing in the future leaders of our community.”
The event will feature a Community Engagement Fair, offering a platform for local organizations to connect with residents and provide valuable, local resources. The Center for Conflict Resolution will conduct two workshops focused on de-escalation techniques and conflict resolution strategies. These sessions aim to equip youth with skills essential for workforce development and personal growth.

Attendees will also enjoy a networking reception with light refreshments, fostering connections among residents, leaders, and organizations. The evening program will include opening remarks, a special performance, the presentation of The Spirit of Nelson Mandela Award, and an intergenerational conversation designed to bridge generational gaps and inspire dialogue.
Organizations from around Chicago will be on site to share resources and support with event attendees. Among the tabling organizations are the Center for Conflict Resolution, Chicago Commission on Human Relations, The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center, BA NIA Inc., Black Star Project, Center on Halsted, Cook County Commission on Human Rights, Chicago Dream Builders, Guitars over Guns, Illinois Department of Human Rights, Live the Spirit Residency, One for One Chicago, True Believers Community Connections, Youth Guidance, Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy, and the Chicago Metropolitan Chapter of NOBLE. Each organization connects to Mandela’s mission in a different way. Attendees are encouraged to visit the tables while enjoying live music, participating in interactive youth-focused activities, and learning about all the amazing individuals and organizations in Chicago that serve others.
