World Business Chicago (WBC) is a public-private, non-profit partnership that drives inclusive economic growth and job creation, supports business, and promotes Chicago as a leading global city.

The Global Strategic Initiatives team leads WBC’s efforts to promote Chicago as a global city. As part of GSI, Chicago Sister Cities International program’s mission is to promote Chicago as a global city, develop international partnerships and networks, and share best practices on a city-to-city basis.

 

Position Description Overview

WBC is seeking an Intern to work on World Business Chicago’s international programs. This includes hosting international delegations, supporting Chicago Consular Corps activities, and working with staff and volunteer committees on business, education, culture and best practice exchanges.

 

Global Youth Ambassadors Leadership Virtual Summit

The Global Youth Ambassadors Leadership Program’s inspires globally-minded teenage girls from around the world to become the international change-makers of the next generation. A joint program of Chicago Sister Cities International (CSCI) and the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), the program is aimed at teenage girls (14–16) from Chicago and its 29 international sister cities.

Now in its seventh year, the highlight of the program is an immersive Leadership Summit, taking place virtually July 13 -20th. The Summit will host 30 girls from Chicago and its sister cities to take part in workshops, discussions and presentations on advocacy, activism and leadership. Throughout the week, the girls engage with Chicago’s business and civic leaders and participating in workshops, discussions and presentations on advocacy, activism, and leadership.

 

The Summit aims to:

  • Empower emerging leaders
  • Teach strategies for leadership, advocacy and activism
  • Inspire young women to become agents of change
  • Build a network of globally minded leaders

 

The Intern will work as an integrated member of the team. Additionally, the reach and impact of the program has grown beyond Chicago through the development of expanded alumnae programs.

It is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience planning a large-scale program, while interacting with people from around the world and gaining exposure to Chicago’s top leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Work with CSCI, UIC and key stakeholders to create programming and schedule
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of all scheduled programs
  • Assist in organizing mentorship and alumnae group programs and outreach
  • Act as a key point of contact for participants
  • Prepare a variety of written correspondence, reports and other materials
  • Track and manage key pieces of participant information (release forms, etc.)
  • Work with participants to write and edit brief bios
  • Help participants create individual PowerPoint presentations
  • Assist in logistical preparation
  • Participate in training, risk management and emergency plans
  • Provide leadership to participants
  • Facilitate group conversation or project work
  • May occasionally assist on other international programs
  • Other assignments as defined by Deputy Director and CSCI staff

 

Requirements

  • Undergraduate student
  • Have strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Passion for international relations, citizen diplomacy, global education and/or women and gender studies
  • All staff working on the Summit, including interns, undergo a criminal background check, as the Summit requires working with minors

 

Desired Skills

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Work well independently or with a team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Foreign language skills a plus, but not required

 

This is a 10-week hybrid summer internship position from June 10 – August 16, 2024, paid at $16.00 per hour with up to 29 hours per week. Some meetings and programs will take place in the evenings or on weekends. The intern will need to be available from July 10- 23.
