Diplomatic Trailblazing: Celebrating Myrna Farmer, a History Maker

Meet Myrna Farmer, Executive Director of Board Relations at World Business Chicago, whose remarkable journey from humble beginnings to diplomatic heights exemplifies the essence of Women’s History Month.

A Journey of Resilience and Discovery

Myrna’s story begins in the southern roots of North Carolina, where she cultivated a spirit of adventure and resilience as a “military brat” in an Air Force family. This early exposure to diverse cultures ignited her curiosity and laid the foundation for her future endeavors.

After leaving North Carolina at 23, Myrna embarked on a journey that took her from the sunny shores of California to the bustling diplomatic corridors of the U.S. State Department. Her career path was anything but conventional, as she transitioned from roles in residential real estate to diplomatic missions across the globe.

Charting Her Way to Official Diplomat

In her early days in California, Myrna quickly realized that success in real estate wasn’t just about buying and selling houses—it was about building authentic connections and fostering meaningful relationships. This realization propelled her towards a career that centered on diplomacy, protocol, and international affairs.

Her adventures led her and her former husband on a decade-long journey across West Africa, the South Pacific, Eurasia, and Southeast Asia, where she immersed herself in diverse cultures and honed her diplomatic skills. From serving as a personal assistant to the U.S. ambassador in Togo to advising top government officials on matters of protocol, Myrna’s experiences shaped her into a seasoned diplomat and a trailblazer in her field.

Making History: A Career Defined by Passion and Purpose

Myrna’s diplomatic career reached new heights when she joined The Office of the Chief of Protocol in 2008, where she played a pivotal role in organizing high-profile events and advising on diplomatic etiquette. Her crowning achievement came in 2012 when she was selected to be part of the advance team for the NATO summit, setting the stage for world leaders in her newfound home of Chicago.

Transitioning from the diplomatic world to her current role at World Business Chicago was a natural progression for Myrna, who continues to leverage her extensive experience and genuine passion for building relationships. Today, she serves as a trusted confidant to board members, leadership, and staff, embodying the spirit of Women’s History Month.

A Legacy of Inspiration

As Women’s History Month draws to a close, Myrna Farmer’s story serves as a testament to resilience, determination, and leadership. Her journey exemplifies the power of courage, commitment, and confidence, inspiring generations to come to chart their paths with grace and purpose.
