World Business Chicago (WBC) is a public-private, non-profit partnership that drives inclusive economic growth and job creation, supports business, and promotes Chicago as a leading global city.

WBC supports Chicago communities and neighborhoods and works to drive inclusive economic growth with impact and investment in all Chicago’s neighborhoods. The Community Impact team supports equitable economic growth and strives to execute on the INVEST South/West (ISW) program. INVEST South/West is one of the existing strategies for acceleration and scalability within Chicago’s disinvested neighborhoods. ISW is a community improvement initiative to marshal the resources of multiple City departments, community organizations, and corporate partners toward 10 initial neighborhoods and 12 targeted commercial corridors on Chicago’s South and West Sides.

 

The Director of the Community Impact is a full-time position that reports to the Vice President of Community Impact.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

INVEST South/West Lead

  • INVEST S/W program stewardship: one-stop shop for all things INVEST South/West; managing across the Mayor’s Office, City government and private sectors.
  • ISW investment data tracking: own the oversight of the $2.2 billion and growing investment commitment data from across the public, private and philanthropic sectors
  • Communications leadership: oversee the external communication and announcement strategy for INVEST South/West relating to key events and generating proactive media coverage. This includes creating the ISW Annual Report and other physical / digital collateral.
  • ISW public sector coordination: manage relationships with 14 departments and sister agencies around investments, announcements and citywide monthly meetings
  • ISW RFP management: oversee 13 flagship RFP sites project management
  • ISW Corridor Manager program: oversee relationship with LISC (Local Initiatives Support Corporation) and DPD (the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development) to ensure Community Managers are being utilized effectively and any issues are elevated

 

Business Development Lead

  • South / West Side business development: lead meetings, create materials, manage relationships (e.g., national big box retailers) to draw local, regional and national businesses to the South and West Sides
  • Black & Latino Excellence Investment Summit: work closely with the Community Impact Manager to organize and execute the annual Community Impact Investment Summit
  • INVEST/South West national retailer bus tour: work closely with the Department of Planning and Development to lead a bi-annual bus tour of key INVEST South/West corridors and real estate opportunities with leading retailers and developers

 

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Advanced project management skills and ability to develop strategy to drive progress against goals.
  • Deep understanding of Chicago’s neighborhoods with established relationships in the South and West sides of Chicago preferred;
  • Experience in public communication, analysis driven strategies, leadership skills;
  • Demonstrated experience building effective private, public, civic partnerships; especially within local economic development partners and low-to-moderate income neighborhoods;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to address all levels of management;
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize workload to meet changing or tight deadlines;
  • Familiarity with how local and regional economies function
  • A good sense of diplomacy in dealing with confidential information

 

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate has a minimum of 7 years of experience in community and neighborhood economic development or similar work experience
  • Bachelor’s degree required with a focus on social sciences, public administration or urban planning and development
  • Must be fully vaccinated
  • Must be willing to work on hybrid schedule with 3 days in the office/ 2 days remote
